Westworld was tied with Saturday Night Live for the most Emmy nominations this year, with 22 each, but while SNL won multiple high-profile prizes on Sunday’s ceremony, Westworld failed to win any of the night’s televised awards. The HBO series did receive five awards, many in technical categories, during the second night of the Creative Arts Emmys on Sept. 10.
But despite being the subject of one of host Stephen Colbert‘s pre-taped bits, in which the host bared all, Westworld went home empty-handed after the live Emmys telecast on CBS.
And Ryan Murphy may have struck Emmy gold with The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story at last year’s awards ceremony, but his newest anthology series, Feud, which scored an impressive 18 Emmy nominations, won only two Emmys, for makeup and hairstyling, both of which were handed out at the Creative Arts Emmys. The series was shut out in the major televised categories handed out Sunday night, including the limited-series acting awards.
Fellow limited series Fargo received 16 nominations and only one Emmy, for outstanding music competition, again at the Creative Arts ceremony.
Stranger Things may be an internet sensation, but the Netflix series went home empty-handed after Sunday night’s kudocast, only winning five awards at the Creative Arts ceremony after receiving 18 noms.
Indeed, while Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale had a big night on Sunday, winning multiple, high-profile awards, Amazon’s Transparent and Netflix’s House of Cards and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt were shut out during the live broadcast despite receiving multiple nominations each.
Other multiple Emmy nominees who were shut out Sunday night include Silicon Valley (10 nominations), Better Call Saul (nine noms) and The Americans (four mentions).
Other notable snubs include Emmys host Colbert, whose Late Show and Showtime election special scored a total of six nominations after a resurgent year, but neither show won an Emmy. Colbert and fellow late-night loser Jimmy Kimmel drowned their sorrows in drinks during Sunday night’s broadcast.
